Principal's Corner: Modernization During Summer, 2019!
Dear Sunnyside Families,
I am so excited to share about Sunnyside's exciting modernization which is taking place during Summer, 2019. Over 74 days, our school will be taken "down to the studs" and classroom interiors and exteriors will be completely treated with new surfaces, including, doors, carpets, windows, and walls. Many of the structures of the school, including the lunch arbor and roofing, will be replaced. Our parking lot will be extended, doubling it's size. This process will cost approximately $18 million dollars and is moving forward, as planned.
To accommodate the work that is occurring on site, Sunnyside's calendar for the 2019-20 school year will be traditional and school begins on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019. Our main office will be open for business on August 14th, 2019 and will be operating out of Room 201 at Ella B. Allen School which is located at 4300 Allen School Lane, Bonita, Ca 91902. Parents are invited to register and verify residency between August 14th and the start of our school year.
Our community is so excited and grateful for the privilege of this modernization and I look forward to inviting our students, staff, and community back to the newly modernized school at the start of 2019-20!
Principal's Corner: Character Counts!
Dear Sunnyside Families,
When I first stepped into the role as the new principal of Sunnyside Elementary School, I recognized how important it is to have a high-quality learning environment.
I created the School Climate / PBIS Committee to help identify issues around the school and make important decisions that would help address these issues and move our school forward. This team is driven by staff members who care about our school and strengthening its environment and they were key in identifying a need for character education.
We want our students to learn to be good students, but it is just as important (if not more!) that they learn to be good people. With this lense, we have adopted a Character Education program that will teach high-qualities values of strong character and social-emotional learning to our students.
Each month, students will participate in an interactive lesson that builds character, understanding and community among our students. Each month, we will also recognize students for positive character that they have displayed around our school. Though we know that issues related to behavior will occasionally still occur on campus, this important first step will focus on proactively educating our students on what it means to be a good person.
Our school motto has always been "Bright futures begin at Sunnyside" but we also know that bright futures begin with good character. I encourage all families to join us in having these conversations about character at home. Thank you for your partnership!
The staff of Sunnyside School endeavors to provide students an instructional program and a learning environment which
• Mastery of grade level standards.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Creativity and an appreciation for the arts.
• Responsibility and self-discipline.
• Motivation for lifelong learning.
• Acceptance and appreciation of others.
• Knowledge of physical and emotional well being.
• Technological literacy.
Our motto, "Bright Futures Begin at Sunnyside," supports our vision that each of our students does indeed have a bright
future and that when staff and parents and community work together on behalf of the children, we form a powerful alliance
that will enable each child to reach his or her potential. To achieve our vision we are committed to ensuring that all
students are provided a dynamic, well-balanced education in a nurturing, accepting, child-centered, environment where
learning is viewed as a worthwhile, life-long adventure.
